Point One
An Irish gymnastics apparel brand for competitive junior gymnasts. Gymnastics, worn off the floor.
The insight
Gymnastics is the only sport scored in tenths. A bent knee, flexed feet, a step on the landing — each one costs a tenth. That arithmetic is the language of the car home, and the gymnasts themselves run it live mid-competition, losing a tenth on bars and chasing it back on beam.
There is plenty of apparel for the sport. There was almost nothing for the life around it. Nobody had built a brand on the scoring.
What I built
The whole thing: the name and its trademark clearance, the brand system, three designs, production-ready print files with type converted to outlines, the Etsy storefront, and the landing page at pointone.ie.
The brand’s device is the official document register — the judging slip, the competition-day kit list, the Saturday running order. Deadpan, accurate, restrained, with the joke always in the accuracy. A bare number is not a garment.
The test that changed the design
Five candidate designs went in front of a competitive club gymnast in the target age range. The three that were documents — the scorecard, the kit list, the running order — were all loved. The two that were bare numerals were both rejected. She reads the notation fluently, so comprehension was never the issue. Desire was.
Three for three on documents, nought for two on numerals. That one session set the rule every design is now tested against: is it a document, before is it on brand.
Where it stands
The first sample run is with the printer and in test. The shop opens on Etsy in October. The commercial question still open is price: the margin floor was modelled on a hoodie and the hero product is a crewneck, so that model is being rebuilt before anything is listed.
